The football game between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots will be kicked at 6:30 ET on February 3rd at the new Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Everybody in Atlanta will be hoping to cash on some of the money being made during the biggest sporting event in the U.S.A. The NFL has announced that it will fine players who do not stand during the National Anthem, so we don’t expect to see many kneeling .
The Super Bowl is big business. It has been reported that CBS, NBC and FOX pay about $3 billion a year during 10-year contracts, during which time each network gets to broadcast a Super Bowl game three times with exclusivity.
Other companies put big money for sponsorships, and that also means big money for the NFL. Visa, for example, has recently renewed their partnership contract with the NFL, and they expect their revenue to reach $1.39 billion just for this 2018-2019-football season. The NFL has also managed to land new sponsorships from McDonald’s and Pizza Hut, just to mention two that everyone knows . The NFL also made deals (with) Caesars (its first casino partner) as well as Facebook for video content and Amazon for streaming.
The Super Bowl is not only about finger foods and football. It is a peculiar American phenomenon that Americans are crazy Super Bowl ads. That is the other reason that Americans stay glued to their TVs, and advertisers will be shelling an estimated $500 million to air their commercials during the Super Bowl, which boils to a little over $5.2 million for a 30-second ad spot. The ads are often unpredictable, sometimes funny, and usually memorable. Unfortunately, most ads are only aired inside the United States. At some date after the Super Bowl, CBS puts a program that features the best commercials from the game.
An interesting fact about the Super Bowl is that the halftime performers do not get paid for their performances. This year, the group Maroon 5 will headline. It is rumored that both Pink and Rihanna turned the honor. It is said that Rihanna refused the invitation in order to show support to Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback who began the controversy of kneeling during the National Anthem to protest racial injustice. A Houston hip-hopper, Travis Scott, will also be performing, as will a rapper from Georgia by the name of Big Boi, the outspoken member of Outkast.
Tickets for people like you and me were selling for between $4,000 and $6,000, although there were hotel and ticket packages for $5,645 for people willing to share a room. Atlantans are going to be raking a lot of money that won’t be easy to compute for official statistics. This money will come from big hotels, small hotels, large restaurants, small restaurants, bars, legal gambling, illegal gambling, people selling tee shirts or street food, people selling parking spots in their backyards, people turning their homes Airbnbs, Ubers, taxis, babysitting and sex.
Yes, sex. Sex is always a side effect of any Super Bowl. The Super Bowl does not cause sex trafficking, it simply brings millions of people the city, and the sex traffickers come along with them. And so do the sex buyers. Sex traffic includes prostitution and sex slavery. Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world, and any kind of prostitution is illegal in the United States. Authorities often turn a blind eye prostitution, but sex slavery is completely different. It has been calculated that in 2018, there were hundreds of thousands of people living in conditions of modern slavery in the United States. Most of them are women or girls, and over 50% of them are sexually exploited. Those being trafficked are usually girls between the ages of 12 and 14. Sex traffickers need to move their girls constantly to avoid detection.
It is encouraging that the city of Atlanta has put posters of missing children who may have been forced the world of sex trafficking. Airline agents and hotel employees have been trained to spot possible victims. Convenience store workers have also been trained, because that is where sex traffickers and their victims shop a lot of their food and necessities. Freedom stickers have been placed inside booths in public restrooms. Freedom stickers have phone numbers that victims can call or text if they want help. Even the Atlanta strip club restrooms have been plastered freedom stickers, which, hopefully, will be a lifeline for some young people. It has been proven that the most effective way to increase human trafficking arrests is by posting these hotline numbers in public places. But even if only a few kids are saved in Atlanta, and only a few arrests made, the campaign will, at the very least, serve as a wake up call for the average citizen. Human trafficking is a worldwide problem that we all need to be aware .
FYI is an acronym, and an acronym is a word formed by combining the first letters of each word of a name, such as NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) that is frequently seen in the news. Another one you probably know is AIDS, which is an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Sometimes acronyms are pronounced as a word as in NATO and AIDS, and sometimes the letters are pronounced individually, such as FYI (for your information). And most of the time they are not even pronounced, as they are used mostly in social media, business communication and Internet. But we do hear CNN (Cable News Network) reporters saying ASAP frequently, which means As Soon As Possible and is hard to pronounce.
Sometimes acronyms become words, such as the word scuba. Everybody knows that word, but few know it started out as an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
Another acronym that became a word is laser, which began as the acronym Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Most of us are very pleased that these two words became acronyms.
For now, try to incorporate FYI and ASAP into your daily communications, and don’t spend too much time remembering what AIDS and LASER and SCUBA really mean. But you should be able to recognize NATO as it has become a big issue in North America and Europe.
Here are six business acronyms that you should know if you are a businessperson, and maybe aspire to if you are in middle management. Which one would be the lowest stress and the highest salary?
